The Parks Dinarides – network of protected areas of Dinarides have organized round table on the theme „Climate change in protected areas“.
Since climate change represents a significant risk and challenges for protected areas and their unique natural values, this event wanted to draw attention to the sensitivity of the most valuable natural areas and ecosystems in Montenegro to ever-increasing climate change and to initiate dialogue and cooperation between all relevant parties on the impact of climate change to protected areas.
The event gathered representatives of relevant institutions in the field of climate change, nature protection, protected areas management in Montenegro, experts and representatives of the civil sector.
Nela Vešović Dubak, Assistant Director of the Public Enterprise of National Parks of Montenegro emphasized the role of national parks in mitigating the negative effects of climate change, which is reflected in following words: vulnerability, adaptation, resilience and mitigation. She said that now they are considering how to design future five-year management plans for NPCG, and that this company is currently relying on reports based on existing and earlier research by experts who have shown that there are vulnerable species in national parks, populations and habitats, endangered by the adverse effects of climate change.
Ešeh Husić, Director of the Directorate for Climate Change and Mediterranean Affairs from the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism spoke about the current activities of this institution on completing the strategic climate framework of Montenegro. In this regard, he pointed out that the issue of vulnerability of certain ecosystems will be considered in the preparation of the Third National Report of Montenegro on Climate Change to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Zoran Mrdak, director of the Dinarides Park, emphasized the complexity of climate change and stressed the need for timely reaction and the importance of adapting protected areas to them.
Independent consultant Đorđije Vulikić presented the activities of Parks of Dinarides on the prepared Analysis of the vulnerability of protected areas to climate change, which aims to point out the urgent problem of climate change and the existing and expected impacts that this phenomenon has on protected areas in Montenegro.
The event included activities on the inclusion of climate change in the protected area management plans in Serbia, as well as the activities of Nature Park Medvednica from Croatia on the preparation of the Plan for adaptation of this park to climate change.
Parks of Dinarides implement the project "Climate Change in Protected Areas" which is realized through the program "Together for a Better Climate in Montenegro",implemented jointly by NGO Green Home, Green Building Council of Montenegro and CAN Europe, and supported by the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro and the Ministry of Public Administration.
